Dimensions Family School’s mission states that we are a “family centered, community oriented educational nonprofit.” It is important that we create a supportive and inclusive environment for our families that attend programming, but we also actively work with local educational and youth development groups, businesses, and government to be a positive force in the wider community as well. Here are some examples!

DFS has been fortunate to work with a very large homeschooling Girl Scout group, Troops1152/1252. In the past year we have helped several of their girls earn awards that benefit the wider community.  This summer we were the happy recipients of their efforts! Two scouts made this custom built tool cabinet (shown above) for our Project Based Learning program.

In addition, this summer DFS has been hosting two interns from the City of Durham’s YouthWork program, which has brought value to our school in the form of camp support and readying the building for fall programming while also benefitting two students that attend public schools here in Durham.

This summer we’ve also created a partnership with Duke Gardens, where we will offer discounts to members on all of their educational programming; in addition, they will also support our teachers with professional development and custom educational experiences for our students that tightly integrate into the classes we offer at DFS. In Durham, we are a member of the 9th Street Merchant’s Association and have partnership agreements with a dozen businesses for member discounts. We also help host 9th Street events, such as the Halloween Parade and Trick or Treat event, the Sip and Stroll, and more. Merchants have supported us in turn by offering (the new and upcoming fall) silent auction items and previous donations were made for our teacher gift bags at the end of year celebration. Finally, we offer community events open to all families like the Children’s Craft Market (first Saturday in October and April) and monthly movie and game nights. Many more partnerships and shared events are likely to sprout in the coming year.

DFS is proud to be a part of our community – a community of homeschooling families, a community of Durham, Chatham, and Triangle-area families, and a community of businesses, all seeking to make our corner of the world a better place to live and learn.
